Triggerfish is a Cape Town-based media and entertainment company passionate about producing original character-driven stories with universal appeal. Established in 1996 as a boutique stop-frame animation studio, it made some of South Africa’s most memorable commercials.
Building on its success in the television commer
cials industry, in 2001, Triggerfish was invited to produce animation for the first season of the local version of US educational program, Sesame Street, which won numerous awards and nominations at festivals around the world. This project (over 40 minutes of animation) is still the largest international animation project ever awarded to a South African company. Triggerfish directed and produced all the material, coordinating 10 animation studios across South Africa.
On the strength of this, Triggerfish was commissioned to produce animation for the U.S. Sesame Street and over the next 6 years we completed animation for 3 seasons of the local show, and 4 seasons of the US show. Since then we have grown into Africa’s largest CG animation company, employing some of the continent’s most talented digital artists and developers.
As one of the longest running animation companies in South Africa, we’re not afraid to take on big challenges. We leapt onto the world stage with our first feature film, Adventures in Zambezia (starring Abigail Breslin, Leonard Nimoy and Samuel L. Jackson) and our second film, Khumba , following close behind. With two world-class animated feature films behind us, Triggerfish is a major player in the development of South Africa’s thriving local industry and one of Africa’s most exciting technology companies.
Adventures in Zambezia was selected for screening at the prestigious Annecy International Animation Film Festival and won the Best South African Feature Film category at the 2012 Durban International Film Festival. Adventures in Zambezia is set to become Africa’s most successful film export.
We have a master plan for world domination as a global media and entertainment company that brings a unique, creative voice from the heart of Africa to audiences around the world.
